Having made yogurt at home for a few years using nothing but retail top name brand yogurts like Dannon, Fage, Verka (really good, btw), I was curious to find out what if any significant differences I might find in terms of taste, those coming from either direct set (store) or heirloom cultures with the latter being this Bulgarian variety. In short, after the first three or so uses of a direct set starters, the flavor qualities tended to lesson which I hear is to be expected. That said however, the first two batches made from a top name brand like Fage tasted super-good!
What's very pleasantly surprising about these heirloom cultures with the Bulgarian mentioned here being my first taste are the unique flavor qualities that are present batch after batch. I guess that how it's supposed to work; like Duh, right? Also, speaking of taste, this particular Bulgarian culture packs a lot of punch in terms of taste which says a lot considering there absolutely no additives, just whole milk and these wonderful little bugs. I'm in!


It is good only after the second batch, so be patient.

Easy to use

Like another review, this is my 2nd time buying this culture after killing the first one after about 5 or 6 years (entirely my fault). Tastes great, is easy to get started, and easy to keep going.

It took the full 12 hours for the first batch to set but once it did it is smooth and creamy. I had hoped it would be a bit more tangy but it is still delicious.

Yummy, VERY mild yogurt

It took a while for me to figure out how to make this yogurt correctly, because mine really only needs to culture for 2 hours! Anything longer than that, and it curdles. However, once I figured this out, I have been making truly delicious yogurt, batch after batch.
