Heirloom Yogurt Starter Cultures

$14.99

Our Heirloom Starter Culture Variety Pack is perfect for beginners! It doesn't require the use of a yogurt maker and can culture right on your countertop - just add milk.

For this variety pack, we’ve carefully collected four of our favorite Scandinavian yogurt strains - sample rich, custard-like Filmjolk; drinkable Piima; mild, creamy Viili; and honey-scented Matsoni.

Try them all and find what you like best!

  • Heirloom Starter Cultures Included in the bag:
    • Viili Starter Culture: A Finnish yogurt variety, Viili is very mild and creamy, with a fairly thick consistency. It’s a versatile favorite that’s perfect on its own or in any yogurt recipe.
    • Filmjölk Starter Culture: Another Finnish variety, Filmjölk has a tangy flavor reminiscent of cheese and a custard-like texture.
    • Matsoni Starter Culture:  Matsoni, from The Republic of Georgia, has a thin, custard-like texture with notes of honey. Its flavor is the most “yogurty” and is a popular choice for frozen yogurt.
    • Piimä Starter Culture: Piimä, a Scandinavian variety, is very thin and drinkable with a mild flavor. Culture it with cream instead of milk to make a tasty sour cream-like topping.
  • Instructions for using these cultures are included and may be found here.

I DIDN'T BELIEVE IT.

I have been making yogurt off and on for years, always having to re-purchase yogurt to make yogurt. It seemed silly, but that was the only way. When I read about the infinite cultures sold by CULTURES FOR HEALTH, I didn't think it was possible. But it is. I have cultured over and over again. It is true that the initial culturing rendered a weak product. But I followed the directions and repeated the process and after the 2nd time, I got a perfect batch. The product is as advertised. It produces over and over again. I don't have a special yogurt maker. I use a heating pad and a styrofoam cooler that holds 4 quart size jars. I cook it for the recommended 5 hours and it's perfect. Just follow the instructions and you will get perfect yogurt. And then, buy the milk kefir grains. They produce kefir that tastes wonderful. This company is my new "moving buddy"!

Not for off grid homestead

So I got these yogurt starters thinking they would really be heirloom and be able to be used over and over again without having refrigeration to put them up in unfortunately the culture is just keep dying whenever there's a fluctuation in temperature between daytime and night time if I have to have my wood stove on to keep my home warm the next morning the cultures are all curdled and grainy. Luckily though the key for greens we got are doing good and are not sensitive compared to these yogurt cultures.

I love making heirloom yogurt.

I'm very happy with my purchase. The yogurt is slow to "wake" up. It gets better every time I make it and it tastes wonderful. Thank you for this.
